This is an old fave from my childhood, and I'm SUPER excited to read this.

I do wish I had the foresight to do some original artwork, but the idea to read this came too late to do anything like that. I also wish I could find the artwork from the schoolbook that I initially read the story in. Sam was drawn like an ordinary human, no ghostly/deathly imagery was used. But the shit-eating grin combined with the black, empty eyes gave it an uncanny-valley feel that was just sublimely creepy in a way that I can't fully articulate. Whoever did that artwork DEFINITELY earned their pay.
