Symphony No. 3 in E flat major ‘Rhenish’, Op. 97 by Robert Schumann

Schumann completed this, his final symphony, in 1850 with the premiere performance being given in 1851 in Düsseldorf with Schumann conducting. Schumann gave the title ‘Rhenish’ to the symphony in reference to the Rhineland, the area of Germany on either side of the Rhine River. Schumann had recently travelled through the Rhineland with his wife Clara, and the beauty and majesty of the area inspired the composition of this symphony.

This work is comprised of five movements:
I. Lebhaft
II. Scherzo: Sehr mäßig
III. Nicht schnell
IV. Feierlich
V. Lebhaft
