Beethoven completed this quartet in 1809 at the age of 39. This quartet has the nickname ‘Harp’ quartet due to the extensive use of pizzicato arpeggio sections in the first movement similar to someone playing on a harp. This nickname was not given by Beethoven himself, but by the publisher.

This quartet is comprised of four movements:
I. Poco adagio – Allegro
II. Adagio ma non troppo
III. Presto
IV. Allegretto con variazioni
