It should be noted that the 1619 Project is based on lies. The first "20 or so" Africans brought to the US were sold to Europeans by African tribal slave traders .. and paid their voyage in the accepted manner of the day: a period of indentured servitude. Anthony Johnson, a 1620 arrival, served his indenture and received his equal portion of land as did all new residents of the colonies. He, in turn, took indentured servants, paying their voyage fees as was the custom. Johnson, an Angolan, owned 500 acres of land and the indentures on 4 European & 1 African servants. Johnson's African servant, John Casor, became the first chattel slave in America through the settlement of the Johnson v Parker lawsuit which was decided in Johnson's favor; the year was 1655, Virginia Colony.
The Court documents, such as they are, are available to view online (assuming they have not been "cancelled" by the "woke").
Of further note: Johnson married Mary, another indentured servant who worked at the farm where he served out his indenture. They had sons who were granted lands through the "headright system", and also owned servants' indentures. Johnson's wife and daughters were granted tax exemption just like European women.
History is far more complex than the revisions of the self-serving.
Addendum:
Alex Haley's "Roots" was a plagiary. It was plagiarized by Haley from a work of fiction written by another black writer. Haley was sued for plagiary, lost, and was forced to split with the original writer all profits and proceeds from the sale of the book and miniseries. It is not an historical or biographical work.
