In 1903 the techniques that early auteur George Melies would be known for are in their infancy-while a goodly number of his traditional jump-cuts are in use, nearly all of the special effects in this three-and-a-half minute feature are comprised of clever scenery, wire work and stage magic, puppetry and clever, acrobatic actors in costume. Also, Pathe Studios was still working on its patented tinting process and it was not yet widely in use (although Segundo de Chomon was able to use the technique in a very limited fashion in The Spring Fairy in 1902). Even so, this early short is astonishingly full of fast-paced action and spectacle, is in a near-perfect state of preservation for its age and IMHO opinion is a perfect, short diversion for the eyes as I sip at my coffee and biscotti...Silent, B&W.
