Mozart completed this symphony in April of 1773. By March of 1773, Mozart had entered into the employ of Prince-Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo. While the position was secure role within the court of Salzburg, the salary was comparatively low and importantly did not provide much opportunity to compose opera. The Symphony No. 22 is one of the shorter symphonies Mozart would compose, with an average performance of approximately 9 minutes.

This work is comprised of three movements:
I. Allegro assai
II. Andantino grazioso
III. Presto assai
