The Mission: Contrasting Yet Complementary Views of God's Love

SYNOPSIS:
The Guarani man had the choice to cut the throat of Rodrigo Mendoza (Robert Deniro) for Mendoza's murder of fellow tribesmen, mercenary activities, and slave-trading. Instead, the Guarani man cut the burden, freed Mendoza, forgave him, allowing Mendoza to go free from what Mendoza had been carrying-around as a self-imposed penance outside of himself and, more importantly, from his interior burden of Mendoza having murdered his own brother. When war was waged against the Guarani again from external forces, Mendoza-turned-priest and Fr. Gabriel firmly decided to stay with the Guarani, expressing their love in two contrasting ways. Fr. Gabriel (Jeremy Irons) would stay yet not take up physical weapons; Fr. Mendoza would use his prowess, stealth, and honed skills to defend the home of the Guarani. As the outcome in any battle is uncertain, both men met the same destiny while expressing contrasting views of God's Love.
