In this maxim, Goethe states our need to return to works of art on multiple occasions, in order to understand and profit from them. They are not to be taken in at a single experience.
By "art," we should understand, not simply the plastic arts; but also literature, music, or even newer kinds of art, like films. Indeed, the principle of this maxim even applies to appreciating beautiful sights in nature.
