British residents arriving into the UK after travelling from certain countries are required to pay £1,750 to quarantine in hotels for 10 days, where they are given three meals a day. Covid tests then need to be taken on days two and eight of isolation to ‘enable authorities to track new cases more effectively’, according to the Department of Health. Penalties for non-compliance include a £1,000 fine for travellers who fail to take mandatory tests and a £2,000 fine for failing to take the second mandatory test – along with a 14-day extension to quarantine. Residents arriving into England who lie on their passenger locator forms about visiting a red list country face a fine of £10,000 or up to 10 years in jail, and those who fail to quarantine in a designated hotel can be fined between £5,000 and £10,000. These rules were introduced on Monday 15 February to protect the UK from more stringent variants of Covid-19 while vaccines are being rolled out. Foreign nationals and non-UK residents arriving from red list countries are already banned from entering the UK.
