Chuck Schumer & Nancy Pelosi Deliver Democrat Response To President Trump's Address 1/8/19
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Tuesday night that President Trump used his prime-time Oval Office address to "manufacture a crisis, stoke fear, and divert attention from the turmoil in his Administration." In a response delivered jointly with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., Schumer called on Trump to approve legislation ending the partial government shutdown "while allowing debate over border security to continue." "We can re-open the government and continue to work through disagreements about policy," Schumer said. "We can secure our border without an expensive, ineffective wall. And we can welcome legal immigrants and ref.s without compromising safety and sec. The symbol of America should be the Statue of Liberty, not a thirty-foot wall."
In her remarks, Pelosi accused the Trump administration of practicing "cruel and counterproductive policies" at the southern border. “Sadly, much of what we heard from President Trump throughout this senseless shutdown has been full of misinformation and even malice,” Pelosi said, kicking off the very somber rebuttal. “The president has chosen fear — we want to start with the facts.”
Pelosi accused Trump of rejecting bipartisan bills to reopen the government, “over his obsession with forcing American taxpayers to waste billions of dollars on an expensive and ineffective wall — a wall he always promised Mexico would pay for.”
“The fact is we all agree we need to secure our borders while honoring our values,” Pelosi said, listing ways to further fortify the southern border.
“The fact is, the women and children at the border are not a security threat, they are a humanitarian challenge,” she continued. “And the fact is, President Trump must stop holding the American people hosge, must stop manufacturing a crisis, and must reopen the government.”
Schumer was equally unsparing of Trump, arguing the president, “just used the backdrop of the Oval Office to manufacture a crisis, stoke fear and divert from the turmoil in his administration.”
“End this shutdown now,” Schumer said.
