Während sich deutsche Politiker vehement für eine Freilassung der 31-Jährigen aussprechen und nicht mit Kritik an Italien sparen, schießt der italienische Innenminister Matteo Salvini scharf. Er erklärte auf Twitter, dass Italien in jedem Fall bereit sei, „die reiche, deutsche Gesetzesbrecherin auszuweisen“.

Auf die kritischen Kommentare aus Deutschland sagte er, er erwarte „Schweigen und Respekt“ von anderen europäischen Ländern, insbesondere aber von Deutschland. Die Verantwortung für den Fall liege beim Gericht. Und er forderte die Richter auf, hart zu urteilen: „Ich erwarte schwere Strafen von der Justiz für diejenigen, die das Leben italienischer Soldaten angegriffen und unsere Gesetze wiederholt ignoriert haben.“
