StarHopper Untethered Hop & [Rotating Habitats] for Elon Musk Mars Colony Plan
After the first successful Starhopper untethered hop of 20 m, a Starhopper 2nd hop could go as high as 200 m. Furthermore, it seems that we can finally see some real NASA and SpaceX collaboration happening with regard to the development of Starship / Super Heavy.
After the first untethered Starhopper test flight success, the second untethered SpaceX Starhopper hop test of as high as 200 m is expected within the upcoming week.
NASA announces US Industry Partnerships to Advance Moon & Mars Technology, with TWO remarkable mentionings of SpaceX / Starship. The first one involves the development of the orbital propellant refilling technology, an essential feature of Elon Musk Starship rocket.
The second partnership between NASA and SpaceX is even more intriguing: SpaceX shall "work with NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida to advance their technology to vertically land large rockets on the Moon"! So NASA is indeed considering utilizing SpaceX's Starship / Super Heavy system to fulfill their ambitious Artemis mission of landing humans on the moon by 2024.
The vertical landing technology is surely crucial, as nothing has ever landed on the moon that's even remotely as heavy as SpaceX's Starship. Thanks to the high payload of Starship, we expect this time a human moon base could be built much more easily and faster as compared to during the Apollo era.
Could we colonize the Moon and Mars? In order to answer this question, we first need a realistic concept for human habitat modules in low gravity environment. Dr. Joseph Parker proposed on the annual Mars Society Convention a rotating Mars habitation module concept, where earth-like artificial gravity will be produced by a high-speed MagLev train travelling along a big ring structure.
China's commercial spaceflight sector is bumming: at least 15 Start-ups are currently working on Chinese reusable rockets, trying to replicate the success of SpaceX. This will certainly give a push to the Chinese moon project and moon landing plans as well.
We for sure will keep a close eye on the next Starhopper untethered test, the progress of SpaceX Starship orbital prototype, as well as any Elon Musk Starship update!
