Monosodium Glutamate (commonly known as MSG) is a food additive that became known for its common usage in Chinese restaurants. Perhaps ironically, it is no longer so common in Chinese food because of the negative publicity, but it is still very common in all sorts of other foods, especially fast foods.
Why do food companies use MSG in their foods? First of all, it acts as an enhancer of flavor. Think of a steak or a burger - Monosodium Glutamate is largely responsible for the savory taste. It also acts as a preservative. Although there is a great deal of negative press surrounding it, it has not been positively shown to be dangerous. However, so many people have reported negative reactions to it that the Food and Drug Administration has named a condition known as MSG Symptom Complex. However, let us stress that the FDA recognizes MSG as generally safe for consumption.
Whether or not MSG is dangerous or directly harmful, it does tend to be in foods that we should avoid anyway, especially if we are trying to lose weight. Fast food, and even a large number of fine dining restaurants, have large amounts of MSG in their foods. It can also be found in many salad dressings, pasta and barbecue sauce, snack foods, and canned goods. Avoid processed foods generally, and when in doubt check the label.
