My soul, I know, is sinking in despair,
And feels the way to happiness is lost;
Believes each cherished hope has now been crossed,
While every prospect shakes my heart with fear:
Yet there is safety with my All in All:
Gentle, eternal, and forever true,
I lean on you, God, you and only you,
A refuge free from terror's restless call.
Great help lies in my own power: self-control,
And self-respect, avoiding what does harm;
A healthy life, and seeking mental calm;
By Art, the cultivation of the soul.
But peace requires, not merely good to love,
But trusting outcomes to the Heavens above.
