"Yes" vote in Irish Blasphemy Referendum 2018
Another win for the government and another nail in the coffin of de Valera's constitution. Perhaps a case of "Bye Bye Blasphemy, Hello Hate Crime", as the government may now decide to introduce new hate crime legislation as was hinted to by Fine Gael Senator Neale Richmond in a recent tweet.
The referendum was passed with 65% voting "Yes" and 35% voting "No". The highest "No" vote was recorded in Donegal at 48.5%.
The result was hailed as yet further evidence of the emerging "new, tolerant, liberal Ireland".
The Minister for Justice and Equality Charlie Flanagan welcomed the result of the referendum.
Minister Flanagan said: "It has always been my view that there is no room for a provision such as this in our Constitution. Ireland is rightly proud of our reputation as a modern, liberal society."
