"Seventy years after the Allied bombing raids of Dresden in 1945, a British man who witnessed the attack from the ground has described it as "evil."

An estimated 25,000 people were killed in the resulting firestorm, which destroyed 13 square miles of the city and created hurricane force winds.

Victor Gregg, who was being held by Germans as a prisoner of war at the time, said: "The normal brain would never take it in. It was terrible, demonic, evil."

NOTE: The figure of 25,000 is strongly debated by others, who have estimated the likely toll as 250,000, 500,000 or similar figures.
The Dresden of that time is said to have been a destination for tens or hundreds of thousands of civilian German refugees fleeing from the east.
