Yamaha have announced an all new YZ125X for 2023, or in other words it’s the YZ125X’s turn for a major overhaul, running a redesigned 125 cc two-stroke engine, revised suspension, new braking system, as well as a better ergonomics package, with styling also given a once-over. Basically the X is adopting the changes seen on the regular YZ125 in 2022.
On the engine side of things we’re told essentially everything is new, including the cylinder body, head, piston and piston pin, con-rod, crankcase and expansion chamber. The cylinder port shape has also been updated, alongside the cylinder port timing, and Yamaha promise that’s a change you’ll notice from throttle open all the way through the rev range.
Compression ratio has also been updated, with YPVS or the Yamaha Power Valve System running revised timing, while a CDI unit specific to the YZ125X is now fitted, rather than shared with the MX model. That’s to offer broad usable power according to Yamaha, for cross country and enduro conditions.
The six-speed transmission is also revised, with optimised gear ratios and wider transmission gear teeth.
Providing fuel is a new Hitachi Astemo Keihin PWK38S carb, with power jet, TPS and the accompanying 3D map controlled CDI unit, for a crisp throttle response and excellent over-rev, again according to Yamaha.
The aluminium semi-double cradle frame is race proven and designed for the right rigidity and flex balance, alongside a removable sub-frame also in aluminium but square-tube to keep weight down.
Brakes have also been updated, with a 270 mm front rotor, more rigid caliper and larger pistons, increasing pad contact by a massive 30 per cent, boosting feel and power.
The rear rotor on the other hand shrinks to 240 mm, down 5 mm however Yamaha promise that braking power is unchanged, with the benefit here being reduced unspring weight.
KYB provide the suspension, with Speed-Sensitive inverted fully adjustable forks offering 300 mm of travel, with a fully adjustabl..
