On either side of this gap are several hundred yards of older bollard fence, built at the end of the Bush term or early in the Obama term in office. The Secure Fence Act of 2006 is what authorized the building of a barrier on the border in response to the 9/11 attacks. Bush started building the new steel bollard fence and it was continued for a time under Obama. It wasn't a political football at that time and Obama didn't stop it immediately, but he didn't finish it either.

The current fence built by Trump is very similar to the earlier steel-bollard design, just generally higher, about 28-30 feet. This is the fence that the Border Patrol wanted. Along the 160-mile California border there is about 50-60 miles of the old Bus/Obama fence and about the same amount was built by Trump. Near there City of San Diego, the fence is double-layered. There's a primary and secondary fence.
