NAAM ABDUL HAI MERA - Cover by KHAARTOUM - Original INDIAN FILM SONG: MOHD. RAFI [ENGLISH SUBTITLES]
KHAARTOUM SINGS ENGLISH SUBTITLED Indian film song: 'MY NAME IS ABDUL' from the 1980 HINDI FILM: 'SHAAN'/'PRIDE'. I changed the song from 3/4 to 4/4 and used BHANGRA PUNJABI DRUMMING with SILENCES and CONTRASTS... I FEEL the ORCHESTRATION of the ORIGINAL is too BEAUTIFUL to ATTEMPT ELECTRONICALLY without VANDALISING the SONG, so DRUMS and VOICE was a BETTER TRIBUTE. The SONG has a SUFI THEME from the POINT of VIEW of a DISABLED STREET BOHEMIAN played by ACTOR: MAZHAR KHAN. He OBSERVES the GOOD, BAD and UGLY of PEOPLE and SOCIETY and TRIES to WORK for RIGHTEOUS, but LIKE CHRIST, gangsters oppose his GOOD and throw him from a high gangway to a river where, being disabled, he drowns, but as a RIGHTEOUS MAN. The ORIGINAL is FABULOUSLY SUNG by PLAYBACK SINGER: MOHAMMED RAFI:
The SWEET and VELVET TONE of MOHAMMED RAFI in the STUDIO is a MYSTERY. A SINGER whose QUIET UNASSUMING MANNER and VOICE so QUIET that was unsuited to LIVE SINGING...RAFI'S VOICE as a CLOSE-MIC RESOURCE for STUDIO ENGINEERS became a VOLUME BOOSTED RICH SENTIMENTAL SOUND with all the SUFI MYSTICISM of his GHAZAL and QAWWALI loving LAHORE home town. The RAFI VOICE has an ABILITY to TRANSMIT and CONNECT to EMOTIONS in the LISTENER. It is thought by some that as a MUSLIM SINGER in BOMBAY CINEMA, he was slowly SIDELINED as HINDU SINGER: KISHORE KUMAR gradually REPLACED MOHAMMED RAFI as the 1970s moved on. INTERESTINGLY, both of these STUDIO EMOTIONAL SINGERS DIED at SURPRISINGLY YOUNG AGES and both of HEART TROUBLE...the very HEART they had been PROMOTING and CONNECTING too via CINEMA MACHINARY for DECADES? Composer R.D. BURMAN'S ORCHESTRATION of the SONG with the SWEEPING VIOLINS to CUT ACROSS the MONOTONY of the SONG and the use of AFGHANI PUSHTO sounding MANDOLIN giving the MIDDLE EASTERN SUFI FLAVOUR to the MUSIC is another DELIGHT. BURMAN as another DEEPLY EMOTIONAL CINEMA MAGICIANS who also DIED YOUNG of HEART TROUBLE...
