Laughing Dog Brewing Co Pecan Porter 4.0/5

Laughing Dog Brewing Company out of Ponderay Idaho turns out some nice brews and this is another fine example.Full, rich and complex this porter is an ideal dessert beer. Pecan Porter has a deceptive nose that gave me the impression of another over roasted coffee ale. Instead it turned out to be a completely different brew once it hit the taste buds.The initial hit is more of a baking chocolate,raw cacao than a milk or dark chocolate, this morphs into the sweet and I'd say caramel / candied praline flavor that took me for a turn.Nicely dense w a slow burn thru the middle and a dry overall finish. A very interesting and complex porter, certainly more than I was expecting from the nose. It just goes to show 1st impressions might mean a lot but I wouldn't judge on those alone. The ABV is either 8.1 on the website or more likely the 9.0 on the can, and a well balanced 34 for the IBUs. Checking the SRM w a 1300 lumen light revealed this ale to be darker than a politicians lack of soul, somewhere north of 200 would be my guess. This a really well crafted beer and I would call this a 2 brews after dinner by the fire winner.
