People say don't feed the trolls. But I lost my virginity to a girl I met online. I have been in chat rooms and on message boards my entire social life. That's how I learned how to socially interact with people. I had a Twitter account right before Community started, so I was tweeting about the process of pitching the show... I was a Myspace blogger before that, because that's a narcissistic river to stare into. If that's a high, then Twitter is just freebasing, because you don't even have to have a point, a shadow of a thesis anymore.
I do jumping jacks and say look at me! look at me! look at me! And fifty thousand people look at me and give me an emotional validation that I take to a very real bank. I don't mean I "cash in" on it, I mean a very important bank to me emotionally. Like, I thrive on the adoration of strangers. I don't enjoy being around my family. I used to watch TV and I would go "I gotta go out there and I gotta manipulate and be a part of this thing that tells my mom what swear words we're allowed to say in the living room. Like, I got slopped last week for saying "son of a bitch" and now George Costanza said it, or whoever, and my mom's all of a sudden laughing at it, and I gotta get out there with the palm trees...
We're all supposed to show restraint and not express ourselves emotionally just because some people are not mature enough to do so tactfully and diplomatically. So what I try to do is split the difference and I actually make a point, I try to do like, eight or nine, like, I try to keep up a healthy ratio of positive interactions of people that are simply saying "thank you for making a good show", I simply say either "you're welcome" or "thank you", or they're saying "your show rules", 'cause it's a thousand of those to one person saying "your show sucks". I try to get like eight or nine... but it feels weird to do it as a writer because you want to be ironic and you want to be creative, but you just go "thank you". Done. It feels ..
