Ninja Gaiden (1992, Master System)

Ninja Gaiden is a platformer developed by SIMS Co. and published by Sega. It was only released in Europe, Brazil and Australia. Despite having the same name, it is not a port of any other Ninja Gaiden game.
Like in other games of the franchise, you play the ninja Ryu Hanabusa. The story begins with Ryu finishing a mission and returning home to his village, only to find it burned down and everyone slain. One villagers, with his dying breath, tells him that the Bushido, a ninja scroll of great power, has been stolen. Ryu swears to avenge his house and retrieve the Bushido.
The gameplay is quite similar to Ninja Gaiden on the NES and Turbgografx. Ryu has a sword to fend off enemies and can collect various Ninjutsu items, which can be used a limited number of times (as they require some energy you need to collect). Items include homing fireballs, shuriken or a wheel of fire which protects Ryu. Ryu can also jump, cling to horizontal ledges and bounce off of walls.
Fun facts: During the height of the NES era, Nintendo had such a huge market share that they could successfully pressure third-party developers to refrain from porting their games to rival consoles, if they wanted to bring their games to the NES, leaving competitors like Sega and NEC with little third-party support. Sega circumvented this "embargo" by lincencing games from other companies and doing the port (sometimes a whole new game) themselves. Ninja Gaiden is among these titles.
Apart from the Master System and NES/PC-Engine, there are also four other different games with the name Ninja Gaiden. Tecmo seems to like trolling game databases.
