German prisoners of war: reports, humiliated and finally after 10 years hailed
We also deepened our equally in the fate of 60,000 German prisoners of war who were interned by the Soviets after the fall of Stalingrad.
We looked at the impressive images created by PATHE that showed how the thousands of captured soldiers and their superiors through the streets of Moscow were lined and as "spoils of war" were shown to the people.
The suffering caused by the war and the role of individuals in it was a little bit done to played the population was softened with the March of the slain through the streets of the capital
The Germans for the most part, was transported to the far Siberia where they ended up in labor camps to the Soviet economy to help a bit. It was seen as their punishment for the suffering that was inflicted on the Russians.
The soldiers stayed 10 years after the end of the war in the Soviet labor camps. Life there was hard and unforgiving and many went at the bottom of the hardships that were there ago.
It was the great virtue of the late Chancellor Konrad Adenauer to the prisoners of war to get free again. So it could happen that 10 years after the imprisonment in 1955 the soldiers back were allowed to return to Germany.
In the town of Friedland, the survivors of the camps to work. Heartbreaking scenes played themselves there. Especially when those who could again embrace each other after all these years but especially at those who in vain on their beloved family member, father or brother were waiting.
