1. Every mile you drive puts one pound of Carbon Dioxide CO2 into the atmosphere.
A. The Average Miles per Gallon or MPG of all the cars driving on the road is assumed to be 19 Miles per Gallon, or 19 MPG
Only two years ago the fuel efficiency of brand new cars was only 22 MPG and today it has reached 25 MPG. And this is for brand new cars in perfect mechanical working order. As a car ages and is not maintained properly, or is damaged, that number will fall.
Average MPG is assumed to be 19 MPG
B- During combustion
A gallon of gasoline weighs 6.7 lbs. It is mostly Carbon atoms (C).
During combustion, 12 lbs of Oxygen (O2) are removed from the atmosphere and replaced with 19.2 lbs of Carbon Dioxide (CO2).
C- If your car gets an MPG of 19, or 20 miles to the gallon, then you burn one about one gallon of gasoline for every mile driven.
And you put one pound of Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere for every mile driven.
2- When the ice in Antarctica melts, the oceans will rise by 400 feet
A- The land mass of Antarctica is 5% of the surface of the Earth.
B- The ice averages a mile thick or 5280 ft
C. The oceans cover 66% of the surface of the Earth
D. Upon melting the water will all flow into the ocean.
.05 x 5280 ft. = .66 x Y
Y = .05 x 5280 ft. / .66 = 400 ft sea level rise
Oceans rise by 400 feet when Antarctica Ice melts.
