What remains of the Gospel of Mary was discovered in Upper Egypt near a place called Akhmim. It is a Gnostic text, meaning that it contains esoteric knowledge. It also means that it was outlawed by those who took control of Christian teachings. There would have been a campaign by both the new Church authorities and the orthodox Jewish temple authorities, to seek out and destroy any documents that did not comply with what they were teaching. Those teaching Gnosticism were also hunted down and silenced. It is amazing that any Gnostic texts have survived to this day.
