Violin Sonata No. 6 in A major, Op. 30, No. 1 by Ludwig van Beethoven
Between 1801 and 1802 Beethoven completed his violin sonatas No. 6, No. 7 and No. 8. It is unclear when these works were first performed, though it is probable that they were performed together or separately at a concert hall in Vienna, where Beethoven was living at the time. The three sonatas were first published in 1803, as his Opus 30 collection.
All three Op. 30 violin sonatas are dedicated to Tsar Alexander 1st of the Russian Empire. The dedication was an attempt to gain favour at the Royal court of Russia with a view to a potential patronage. Alexander the 1st had been coronated in March of 1801, and in the short period since coming to power had gained acclaim with the Russian people through the reversal of unpopular policies implemented by his father, Paul the 1st of Russia. While Beethoven’s dedication of his three sonatas did not eventuate into a patronage from the Russian court, Alexander the 1st would present Beethoven with the gift of a diamond at the Congress of Vienna in 1814.
This work is comprised of three movements:
I. Allegro
II. Adagio molto espressivo
III. Allegretto con variazioni
