Sufis shun materialism and use prayer, music, and occasionally dance in their quest to get closer to Allah. Despite their dedication to divine love and peace, Sufis have increasingly become targets of extremist Islamist movements who view their practices as being incompatible with “true Islam.”
Sufism, also referred to as tasawwuf in the Muslim world, is a mystical form of Islam. Its adherents use acts of devotion and contemplation to achieve a deeper understanding, knowledge, and closeness to Allah.
Sufis consistently “strive to be aware of Allah’s presence, stressing contemplation over action, spiritual development over legalism, and cultivation of the soul over social interaction.” Unlike other exercises of Islamic theology and jurisprudence, which tend to be more rigid and academic, Sufism relies more on “emotion and imagination in the divine-human relationship.”
