This 1933 NSDAP biography film pays tribute to German Martyr, and composer Horst Wessel--here called "Hans Westmar"--who authored the song "Horst-Wessel-Lied," which is sung at the end of the picture. The song became the co-national anthem of Germany from 1933 to 1945. He took part in street brawls in Berlin during the early parts of the National Socialist movement in the 1920s and 1930s against Communists and jewry. He was killed shortly before this film was released by a Jewish Communist.

Franz Wenzler directed the film with great assurance and panache -- especially its crowd scenes -- and Franz Weihmayr's brilliant, roving cinematography, most effective in the elaborately staged street riots, marked the picture as a visually inspired work.
