Autogynephilia or AGP, 'a man's propensity to be aroused at the thought or image of himself as a woman' was originally conceived, by Dr Ray Blanchard, in fetishistic terms. But that may have been partly to do with the sample he was studying. AGP is actually a multi-faceted phenomenon with three sexual orientations and, today, five different types, which may be combined. Taken together with cultural influence, which AGP is strongly affected by, there is a bewildering array of expressions. But there is one thing that is always present: the idea of appearing to be, presenting or performing, in one way or another, as a woman.
Whatever your opinions on AGP, the fact is that many men, especially in the Anglo-Saxon West, suffer terribly from either the phenomenon itself or its consequences. So how could we help them to manage or alleviate these?
My years in southeast Asia have convinced me that the idea of performance, of gaining validation through the applause and appreciation of others, is far more important than observers in the Anglosphere have recognised. It might be that performance is a way of assuaging the AGP feelings without drastic (and often futile) surgeries. It might even be that the lack of such cases in Blanchard's study group, and conversely, the relative rarity of extreme fetish AGP, and disastrous middle-age transition, in SE Asia, is because performance itself is actually a viable, efficacious therapy for dealing with this condition.
If that's so, then we should pay attention. I begin the discussion in this video but I will follow it up.
