TSUNAMI HITS TONGA - FOOTAGE OF TSUNAMI

15th January 2022, after a large underwater volvanic eruption off the coast, the ensuing ocean rise caused major flooding in Tonga.

A massive volcanic eruption visible from space has occurred in the Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai underwater volcano in Tonga late this afternoon.
Tsunami waves have struck Tonga, including the main island, Tongatapu including its capital Nuku’alofa.
AFIPN cannot verify what damage has occurred and if any fatalities have resulted from the Tsunami. Reports coming out of Tonga, that is now in darkness as night descends is that there is lightning in the ash clouds and ash falling everywhere.
Phone connections are down across the island. There is footage showing waves engulfing buildings, including the Bank South Pacific.
In New Zealand the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a warning for the north and east coasts of the North Island and the Chatham Islands. People are not being advised to evacuate but keep away from beaches and shore areas until 4am tomorrow with strong and unusual currents and surges predicted at shore.
