A charming rogue plays his part in a series of comically romantic vignettes-but the gently ribald farce soon threatens to end tragically...

Animator Lotte Reiniger did not rest on her accomplishments after the early Cinderella (1922) and The Adventures of Prince Achmed(1926), but only redoubled her output-in this 23 minute feature, Reiniger's amazing stop-motion silhouette techniques have achieved new heights of fluidity and grace-the individual characters have such distinctive outlines, with each moving with its own 'body language', that keeping track of the players in this short film is no difficulty at all. Moreover, the advances in Sound technology allow Ms. Reiniger's creations to perform a ballet of lovers to baroque music, pantomiming their way through the short film without even the bare minimum of dialogue cards used by most early productions, letting the character's actions 'speak' for them...

I raise a mug of cocoa to this remarkably preserved Primrose Productions film, and highly recommend Lotte Reiniger's ribald comedy for a quick 'reality break' before bed...B&W, Music
