The use of gas has been forbidden since 1925 and the signing of the Geneva convention, but during the great war it was used frequently by all sides. Chlorine gas can lead to skin burns and severe eye irritation, difficulties to breathe and vomiting. It was the sight of this that the German soldiers saw when the gassed Russian troops made a final push out of the Osowiec fortress. When the expected no resistance they faced an army of wounded soldiers who had wrapped themselves in cloth to make the effects of the gas milder. Osowiec fortress never fell.
