SPEEDWAY (RCA, LP, 1968 - LSP / LPM 3989) [PLUS RECORDING SESSIONS]
*** Recorded June 20, 21 & 26, 1967 ***
"Speedway" is the 25th and last soundtrack album by Elvis Presley at RCA.
It was released on RCA Victor, catalog number LSP / LPM 3989, on May 1, 1968.
It represents the soundtrack album for the namesake film released that year.
By the beginning of 1968, it was clear that Elvis' soundtrack albums had reached rock bottom.
The recording sessions for his new soundtrack LP were held at MGM studios in Hollywood, something that pointed to its slow death.
Eight tracks were recorded, with "Suppose", the only song that held interest for Elvis, dropped from the movie.
"Your Time Hasn't Come Yet Baby" and "Let Yourself Go" were issued as singles, both making the lower reaches of the Billboard Hot 100 and bombing sales-wise.
"There Ain't Nothing Like a Song," rejected from "Spinout", and "Your Groovy Self". both featuring lead vocals by Nancy Sinatra, were recorded at a separate session on June 26.
Three leftover tracks, including one from the May 1963, were unearthed to round out the album.
"Speedway" took over the new low for chart position and album sales by Elvis, selling fewer than 100,000 copies, and jeopardizing his recording career.
Much to his relief, it killed the soundtrack formula, this being the final Presley feature film to have a soundtrack album.
It was also the last Presley album to be released in both stereo and mono editions as mono was being phased out by the industry, thus making its rare mono pressing (LPM-3989) a collectors item.
The LP peaked at number 82 on the Billboard 200.
Here we bring you the full 1968 LP and the surviving bits of its recording sessions. We hope you like it. Enjoy!
