Rampo (1995, Saturn)

Rampo is an FMV-adventure which was made by System Sacom for Sega. It is based on a Japanese film of the same name. The title is derived from Edogawa Rampo (江戸川 乱歩) which is the pen name of Japanese author Hirai Tarou (平井 太郎) (1894-1965). Hirai took the name due his admiration of Edgar Allen Poe.
In the game you play as Rampo. His latest work has been banned by the government. His editor urges him to write a new novel, but Rampo has got writer's block. Rampo has an additional income as landlord, and you start the game collecting the rent. On the occasion, one of the tenants tells him that he heard the voice of a woman in the house (the house is for men only, and female visitors are also not allowed). Upon investigating, Rampo uncovers a greater mystery than simply one of his tenants having improper visitors.
The game is played from a first person perspective. The environment consists of pre-rendered backgrounds with characters being represent by digitized actors. You move between fixed positions in the room, like in The 7th Guest, D or System Sacom's other games like Torico (US title: Lunacy). You are accompanied by your editor which often comments from the off or steps into the frame to give his opinion.
