Zlatan, who has played for Manchester United, Barcelona, La Galaxy, both Milan clubs, amongst many others, told UEFA and Discovery+ in Sweden that:
"I like him [meaning Lebron James] a lot. He's phenomenal, but I don't like when people with a status speak about politics. Do what you're good at doing… I play football because I'm the best playing football. I'm no politician. If I'd been a politician, I would be doing politics…
This is the first mistake famous people do when they become famous. For me it is better to avoid certain topics and do what you're good doing, otherwise you risk doing something wrongly."
Although I am a fan of both athletes, and I am sure James is doing some good work, fuelled by good intentions; why does everything today need to injected with politics? It seems that everything you do or see at the minute has some injected political message from an organization, celebrity, or sports star.
Today, politics appears more commodified and tokenized that ever before. Infinitely complex problems relating to race, poverty, crime, mental health, employment, and many other issues, are not going to be changed by posting a picture and a 50-word caption on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, or Minds - for any celebrity who is really ahead of the curve.
Again, I am not even criticizing Lebron James here, who I am a fan of. It is the overall trend today of stars constantly getting involved in politics that is nauseating. And that what Zlatan is having a pop at, and he is totally right to do so. It is almost an expectation for anyone who has a lot of followers on social media to take a stand on every major topic concerning politics.
