Partly political rant: Knowing the signs, for when you need to take a step back?

I've been a researcher for 30 years now and whenever taking on difficult subjects, it takes an emotional toll, that can be devastating for the unprepared.
Some critical advice I was given 25 years ago, is once again saving my sanity and my critical thinking and I will give you this advice here too?
Learn to identify when it's getting too much and take a step back to, regroup!!

This isn't me giving up!

This is just me taking time out to clear the clutter, so I can better discern fact from fiction, by losing the emotional knee jerk reaction I'm having too often lately!
I can't make the mistake of going down a rabbit hole, that leads nowhere, because I was emotionally invested in a certain narrative and missing vital information that I would've seen with a rational mindset?

There really is too much at stake for me to let that happen?

Also... On the subject of knee jerk reactions, it seems I've acquired another couple of 'Trolls' (or they think they are anyway?)
So the 1st 5 mins is something for them and it's, admittedly, out of character for me (I'm usually quite zen-like!) but they've caught me on a really off day, so please forgive me for that part?
