Commercials for soda or alcohol advertise a “lifestyle” around which the soda/alcohol revolves. Notice the tricks in this commercial for Surge soda. An appeal is made to popularity and the majority. Everyone you see in the video is desiring the soda. Their behavior–which is competitive and unruly–is excused, because the reward is the soda. Even the premise speaks to a certain lifestyle–the first man, who bought the soda, was able to gather a social circle–the other men–thanks to his ownership of the soda. The entire pretense of them being together is predicated on the existence of the soda.
