The East Prussian song (also Song Of East Prussia or Land Of The Dark Forests) was considered the national anthem of East Prussia.
In the early 1930s, the Königsberg composer Herbert Brust (1900-1968) composed his "Oratorio der Heimat". The four-staged final chorale of this oratorio is of the Königsberg writer Erich Hannighofer.
The song caused great enthusiasm in the population, so that it was soon called the East Prussian song and replaced the older national anthem "Sie sagen all, du bist nicht schön" by Johanna Ambrosius.
After the expulsion of the East Prussians (1945-1948), this song became the epitome of their yearning for the old homeland. Thus, a fifth stanza was subsequently created.
The title "Land of the dark forests and crystal lakes" became synonymous with the East Prussian landscape which was used countless times in the past decades as a title for illustrated books, documentaries, etc.
Lyrics:
Land of the dark forests
and the crystal lakes,
over wide fields
light miracles go.
Strong peasants are striding
behind horse and plow,
over field widths
the bird migration roams.
Day has started
over Haff and moor,
Light has started
rises in the east.
And the seas are rushing
The chorale of the time.
Moose stand and listen
To eternity.
Home, wellkept
Between the beach and the river,
Blossom today and tomorrow
Under the cathedral of peace.
