Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Sucharit Bhakdi ist Facharzt für Mikrobiologie und Infektionsepidemiologie. Er leitete das Institut für Medizinische Mikrobiologie und Hygiene der Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität Mainz 22 Jahre lang und war in der Patientenversorgung, Forschung und Lehre tätig. Er hat über 300 wissenschaftliche Arbeiten auf den Gebieten der Immunologie, Bakteriologie, Virologie und Herz-Kreislauferkrankungen veröffentlicht. Neben zahlreichen Preisen wurde ihm der Verdienstorden des Landes Rheinland-Pfalz verliehen.
