Banjo Paterson, the Australian bush poet and author, wrote many ballads and poems about life in Australia in the 1800-1900s.
Banjo spend some time in Yass and we have a park dedicated to his name.
This Australia Day, the country is torn, as it was back when Banjo was writing Waltzing Matilda. While on the surface the song is just a story about a sheep thief, the politics between the Squatters and Settlers and the itinerant shearers were far more complicated. More detail on the ballad here:

It is of interest that Australia almost voted to have this as the national anthem back in 1977.
Today Australia is divided over holding our national day on 26 Jan, with its association with the arrival of a colonizing force, or moving it to another day which can be celebrated by Indigenous Australians as well.
We always get a good lamb ad on Australia Day, this year was not exception, but a little to close to home. Please take over Australia Jacinda Ardern!

What is my view? If something as simple as changing a day will bring some comfort and a feeling of inclusion to a part of the society, why not do it? But our parliament is full of old white men who fear change, and rarely apologize.
