Mendelssohn completed this concerto in 1822 at the age of 13, after he had already completed a trio for strings, two piano sonatas and number of symphonies. The concerto was dedicated to Eduard Reitz, a friend to the Mendelssohn family.

The work is comprised of three movements:
I. Allegro
II. Andante
III. Allegro
