A song about the Swiss knight Arnold von Winkelried, who is said to have thrown himself into the enemy's lances on July 9, 1386 at the Battle of Sempach during the Swiss-Habsburg wars in order to open a breach for his comrades. His sacrifice is said to have been the key to the federal victory against the Habsburgs, which brought Switzerland independence from Habsburg feudal rule.
The text was written in 1841 by Georg Herwegh. The melody was composed by Richard Fuchs, but sometimes the song was sung to the melody of "The god who let iron grow".
When the battle turned to the detriment of the Swiss, Winkelried is said to have packed a bundle of lances from the Habsburg knights and, impaling himself, opened an alley for the Swiss confederates. His sacrifice was the key to the federal victory against the Habsburgs under Duke Leopold III. According to legend, he said the words "Take care of my wife and child" beforehand.
The Winkelriede were a well-known family in Stans (capital of the canton of Nidwalden in Switzerland) until the 15th century. The Winkelried monument, created by Ferdinand Schlöth in 1865, stands there today.

Text:
Vorm Feinde stand in Reih´ und Glied
das Heer mit seinen Fahnen,
da sprach Herr Struthan Winkelried
"Ich will den Weg euch bahnen,
Dir Gott befehl´ ich Weib und Kind
die ich auf Erden lasse"
Und also sprengt er pfeilgeschwind
der Freiheit eine Gasse!
Das war ein Ritter, recht mit Fug
so stolz wie ein Gewitter,
die Feinde vor sich niederschlug.
Hei, wär ich solch ein Ritter
Auf stolzem Roß mit blankem Schwert
in schimmernder Kürasse
zu sterben mit dem Donnerruf:
"Der Freiheit eine Gasse!"
Wenn alle Welt den Mut verlor
die Fehde zu beginnen
tritt du, mein Volk, den Völkern vor
laß du dein Herzblut springen
Zählt nur den Mann, der das Panier
der neuen Zeit erfasse
und durch Europa brechen wir
der Freiheit eine Gasse!
English Translation:
In front of the enemy stood, in rank and file,
the army with its flags,
then Lord Struthan Winkelried said
"I want to pave the way for you,
To you God, I command wife and child
that I leave on earth"
And so he breaks open at the speed of an arrow
an alley for freedom!
That was a knight, rightly so,
as proud like a thunderstorm
knocked down the enemy in front of him.
Hey, if I were such a knight
On a proud horse with a shiny sword
in a shimmering cuirass
to die with the thunder call:
"An alley for freedom!"
When all the world lost heart
to begin the feud
my people, step before the peoples
let your lifeblood run
Only count the man who grasps
the banner of the new time
and we break through Europe
an alley for freedom!
