If They Come In The Morning by Angela Davis...Seize The Time by Bobby Seale...Soul On Ice by Eldridge Cleaver...3 books by members of the Black Panther Party I read in 2019. (I first read Soul On Ice in 1998.) You might think after reading these books by brave and heroic people who have suffered genuine hardship and oppression that perhaps I would finally stop writing bleak, grim and relentlessly depressing ballads about my own life...after all, what do I have to moan and whine about in comparison? Well, here’s yet another one. It is an honest expression of how I often feel...self indulgent? Possibly. Truthful? Definitely.
I sit alone, waiting for morning
to start another wasted day.
The sunrise sees me tired and yawning;
my life begins to slip away.
Why am I here? Why do I bother
and does it matter anyway?
Just for the moment I thought I might succeed.
An acknowledgement of my work – that is all I need;
some recognition of my worth, posterity guaranteed,
but then the fantasy fades, replaced by pain
as darkness and the silence returns again.
