Acoustic Nuclear Death Cover: Lori Bravo's Nuclear Cats (The Third Antichrist) | Gene Willow
Cover of “Nuclear Death/The Third Antichrist” by Nuclear Death from their demo “Wake Me When I’m Dead” 1986 in acoustic death metal and parody manner.
Nuclear Death is one of the earliest death metal bands, and they are not even from Florida, but from Arizona. They have always been a trio: Lori Bravo (bass and vocals), Phil Hampson (guitar) and Joel Whitfield (drums) later replaced by Steve Cowen in 1990. Unfortunately, they aren’t as well-known as Death, Obituary, Morbid Angel and other old school bands, but they are a real classic old school death metal band.
I learned about Nuclear Death when I was about twelve years old, in 2003, from an issue of Dark City—a Russian magazine about heavy metal music. There was a partially humorous article written in the form of a fictional interview: the author wrote that he randomly met Lori Bravo in Moscow and took an interview from her.
There were also short summaries of the lyrics from a few of their songs, and “Bride of Insect” was the most detailed. This made me freak out quite a bit, as I wasn’t used to this kind of lyrics at that time and I didn’t even know well at that age what death metal was.
A few years later, when I was approximately seventeen years old and had the Internet connection, I looked Nuclear Death up online and started to listen to them.
Initially I planned to make this cover song together with Lori Bravo. I reached out to her, and offered her to contribute her vocals. Lori said she was busy with the recording of her next album, but she would try to find the time to try. But when I was working on the recording of the music, Lori’s cat Miso died. Lori was mourning for a few weeks, and of course, that wouldn’t be appropriate to ask her about the vocals when the mix was ready. So I just finished the song myself.
As always, I decided to make the song funny, so I changed the lyrics (except for the last verse) and made the song about Lori’s cats: Lori has six or seven cats (and a dog and also a tortoise).
