The Greek War of Independence, also known as the Greek Revolution (21 February 1821 – 12 September 1829) was a war started by Greek revolutionaries to free them from Ottoman (Muslim) control. The war was fought against the Ottomans and their African vassals. Some white countries offered support to the Greeks in their struggle, including France, Russia, and Great Britain. This war was also prompted by the massacre of Greeks on the island of Chios by the Ottomans. Note, that the residents of Chios had claimed neutrality, and followed the orders of the Ottomans.
