In this very short video I show you my first test of an old mix used to create a purple colored flame. The mixture contains potassium chlorate, calomel, strontium nitrate, and cupric oxide. The original formulation also called for shellac but both it and its popular substitute (red gum) were sold out on Fireworks Cookbook. So I tried it with gum arabic instead. Clearly that was a bad choice. But this experiment confirms that I am on the right track to achieving a pure purple flame and what I learned from the attempt will allow me to formulate a mix that burns continuously. Not knowing what the smoke contains I am going overboard with the safety on this one and will only do the second attempt when the wind is blowing back towards the woods consistently and it's late at night so there is no chance whatsoever of anyone being in any danger at all.
