Violin Concerto in E major, BWV. 1042 by Johann Sebastian Bach

Bach most likely completed this violin concerto between the years 1717 and 1723 while serving at the court of Prince Leopold in Köthen. The otherwise blissful time Bach spent at the court of Prince Leopold was marred by the death of Bach’s first wife, Maria Barbara, in 1720. It was during a visit to Carlsbad to accompany the Prince when Bach would learn his wife, still in had Köthen, unexpectedly died.

Bach would remarry a soprano singer named Anna Magdalena in 721, and would soon bear Bach children. The growing family was one reason Bach would eventually seek employment in a larger city and relocate to Leipzig in 1722.

The work is comprised of three movements:
I. Allegro in ritornello form
II. Adagio
III. Allegro assai with an overall structure of a rondo
