Vaughan Williams completed this work for viola and orchestra in 1934, with the premiere performance being given in November the same year at the Queen’s Hall in London. The work was dedicated to violist Lionel Tertis who was the soloist at the premiere performance.

The work is comprised of eight movements:

II. Carol
III. Christmas Dance
IV. Ballad
V. Moto Perpetuo
VI. Musette
VII. Polka Melancolique
VIII. Galop
