Fatum, Op. 77 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Tchaikovsky would begin work on this symphonic poem in September 1868 while teaching music theory at the Moscow Conservatory. He delayed completing this piece due to starting a relationship with the Belgian soprano Désirée Artôt. While the couple considered marriage, the relationship would end after she decided to relocate to Warsaw with the opera company that employed her.

Tchaikovsky would resume work on this piece in November of 1868, completing it the following month. The premiere performance was given in February of 1869 by the Russian Musical Society. While the work was met with reasonable success at the premiere, later performances would not have such a positive reception. As with many other of his compositions, Tchaikovsky would come to regard the work as a complete failure and destroyed the original manuscript.
