Mozart likely completed this flute quartet in 1778 at the age of 22. The work was composed for performance by the flautist Ferdinand de Jean. Mozart was living in Paris at this time, and was enduring difficult times due to a combination of no stable source of income and also the death of his mother in July 1778.

The work is comprised of three movements:
I. Allegro
II. Adagio
III. Rondeau: Allegro
